Kakheti Governor Resigns to Run for MP Seat
Giorgi Gviniashvili, governor of Kakheti region in eastern Georgia, has resigned to run as ruling United National Movement’s majoritarian MP candidate in Gurjaani single-mandate constituency in the October 1 parliamentary elections.
Gviniashvili has once already run as ruling party’s majoritarian MP candidate in Gurjaani, winning over 72% of votes in the 2008 parliamentary elections; several months later, however, he quit the Parliament after President Saakashvili appointed him as Kakheti governor in September, 2008.
Apart of Gviniashvili, so far there are three other candidates for Gurjaani single-mandate constituency, nominated by Georgian Dream; New Rights and Free Georgia.
