Parties to Receive Funding for Having Women MP Candidates

Georgia will provide financial incentives to political parties to encourage them recruit women candidates in their party lists for the parliamentary elections.

While discussing the draft of electoral code with its second reading on December 23, senior ruling party lawmakers said, that it was decided to take into consideration one of the recommendations from the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s advisory body for legal and constitutional affairs, and to address women’s under-representation in the legislature.

According to the plan some portion of the state funding allocated for political parties will be linked to the proportion of women included on party lists.

An exact scheme of party funding linked to women candidates has yet to be defined and then reflected in the amendments to the law on political parties, which is also currently under consideration by the Parliament.

According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Women in Parliament database Georgia has the lowest proportion of women in the legislative body in the OSCE region (survey involved the lower houses of parliament).
