Opposition Politician Files Suit at European Court
Koba Davitashvili, leader of opposition Party of People, has lodged a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Georgian government over the case of an assault on him more than two years ago.
On November 7, 2007, when riot and other police forces started dispersing anti-government demonstrations in Tbilisi, Davitashvili was attacked by a group of men, taken to other location and beaten up. Davitashvili says then he was taken by perpetrators to a military hospital, which at the time was in the town of Gori with a purpose “to isolate” him amid tense situation at the time.
Human Rights Priority, a Tbilisi-based rights group which filed the suit in ECHR on behalf of Davitashvili, said that although the investigation was launched into the case, perpetrators have not been brought to justice and not even identified.
Davitashvili complains over violation of eight articles of European convention on human rights, including on torture and inhuman treatment, right to liberty and security and right to effective remedy.
Davitashvili wants “complete and impartial” investigation to be carried out into the crimes committed against him, Human Rights Priority said.
