Moscow to Sign Air Traffic Treaty with Sokhumi

Russia’s PM Vladimir Putin has instructed Transport Ministry to strike an agreement with Sokhumi authorizing direct flights between Russia and the breakaway region, the Russian news agencies reported on February 11.

Babushera airport, less than 20 kilometers away from Sokhumi, has not been used for passenger flights since the armed conflict in early 90s, although it was used by Russian troops, which were stationed in Abkhazia as peacekeepers.

During the August war, the Babushera received “several dozens of Russian heavy cargo aircraft,” Vyacheslav Ershba, general director of Abkhazia Airlines, told Itar-Tass news agency.
