Saakashvili Says Opposition ‘Regressed’

President Saakashvili said he was unhappy looking at “large part” of the opposition “regressing” and getting “deeper into the swamp”.

“Frankly speaking I am not really happy looking at one part of our political class and seeing that the opposition is in such a situation. I think it is a tragedy when the opposition is in such condition. A large part of the opposition is behaving in such a manner – what should happen to make one vote for them,” he said while speaking at a meeting with a group of pupil and school teachers in Batumi on January 12.

He said that unlike the Georgian society, which “despite hardship managed to progress”, many opposition figures failed to progress and “still remain where they were five years ago.”

“Not only they failed to progress, but they regressed and got deeper into the swamp,” Saakashvili added.

He made the remarks while speaking about the need to increase level of education in schools. He said that pupils should have an opportunity to obtain basic skills of leadership and democracy from school including by organizing “elections of class president” and electoral campaigns.
