Senior U.S. DoD Official to Visit Georgia October 19

Alexander Vershbow, the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, will visit Georgia on October 19-20, the U.S. embassy said on Thursday.

Vershbow will lead an interagency U.S. government team to launch the first round of meetings of working group on security issues in frames of the U.S.-Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership.

The two countries have agreed to establish four bilateral working groups on the priority areas identified by the Charter, involving democracy, security, economic development and people-to-people relations.

During the security working group meeting in Tbilisi, the sides will discuss Georgian defense reform, contributions to NATO operations in Afghanistan and regional security issues, according to the U.S. embassy.

Other working group meetings are planned for November and December.
