Russian Foreign Minister to Visit Abkhazia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit breakaway Abkhazia on October 2-3 to hold talks with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh and Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said on September 29.
It will be Lavrov’s second visit to the breakaway region after Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia last August.
“Along with Russia and Nicaragua, the independence of Abkhazia was recognized by Venezuela,” Andrei Nesterenko, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, told RIA Novosti news agency. “Without recognizing new military-political and legal realities in Trans Caucasus, it is impossible to expand international cooperation in developing concrete measures on strengthening security and building confidence in the areas of the Georgian-Abkhaz border.”
