EU Troika Meets Two Opposition Leaders
A high-level EU delegation, led by Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, whose country holds EU rotating presidency, met with Irakli Alasania, leader of opposition Alliance for Georgia, and Levan Gachechiladze, an individual opposition politician on July 18.
Irakli Alasania said after the meeting that the internal political situation as well as the current situation on occupied territories was discussed.
“We have thoroughly discussed how the European Union should effectively involve in normalization of the internal political situation and how the authorities and the opposition can find the way out of the current political crisis,” Alasania said.
Levan Gachechiladze said after the meeting, which was held in Alasania’s party office, that he told European diplomats that “destabilization in Georgia is a result of that violence, which the authorities are carrying out.”
“We think that this violence will be ended by the demand for Saakashvili’s resignation,” he said. “If others think otherwise, all the ways should be used, but they will have to assume the relevant responsibility.”
On July 17 the delegation also held talks with Parliamentary Chairman Davit Bakradze. He told reporters after the meeting that the issue of prolongation of the EU Monitoring Mission was practically solved.
“I can say for sure that the mandate of the EU mission will be prolonged from September,” he said.
