French Diplomat Condemns Incident at Parliament

Eric Fournier, the French ambassador in Georgia, said that June 12 incident outside the Parliament was an insult of democracy.

Fournier himself read out the written Georgian-language statement in which he said: “Stones have been thrown at lawmakers elected by the people. Democracy was insulted. Ambassador of the Czech Republic [in Georgia Ivan Jestrab], who came on the [incident] site to find out what had happened, was also insulted. We call upon all the political parties to refrain from provoking violence. We hope that consultations, which started between the President and representatives of the opposition, will continue. Together with my European colleagues we are sparing no efforts for encouraging rule of law and for supporting all forms of democracy.”
