Burjanadze’s Party Activist Arrested for Arms Charges
Police arrested on June 6 an activist from Nino Burjanadze’s party Democratic Movement-United Georgia (DMUG) for alleged illegal purchase, possession and carrying of firearm.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that Gocha Tsiklauri, a former employee of the Interior Ministry’s armament service, carried “unregistered” TT handgun at the time of arrest.
In a statement released on June 6, DMUG condemned the arrest of its activist as part of “the authoritarian regime’s struggle against political opponents.”
“Apparently this arrest is a result of the President’s [June 5] statement in which Saakashvili has openly said that the leader of our party, Nino Burjanadze, ‘creates problems’ for him,” DMUG said.
