Tbilisi Hopes ‘Objective’ Report from EU’s War Inquiry Mission

Although having “questions marks” about some members of the EU-funded mission probing into the August war, Tbilisi hopes the conclusions by the group will be “objective,” Davit Bakradze, the Georgian parliamentary chairman, said on June 4.

“You know we raised question marks over some experts who have been working are still working in this commission, but we hope that eventually the overall report will be objective and we hope that the report will confirm once again the truth, which is known for everyone, that Russia’s aggression against Georgia took place last year,” Bakradze said in televised comments aired by Tbilisi-based Maestro TV.

Deputy head of mission, Marian Staszewski, accompanied by some members of the group are visiting Tbilisi holding meetings with the Georgian officials, after traveling to breakaway Abkhazia last week.

The mission, led by Swiss diplomat, Heidi Tagliavini, is expected to present its report to EU, OSCE, Georgia and Russia on July 31, 2009.
