U.S.: S.Ossetia Polls a Step Away from Negotiated Solution
The U.S. Department of State said it "regrets the decision to hold so-called “elections” in the South Ossetia region of Georgia."
It also said in a statement that it “recognizes neither the legality nor the results” of these elections.
“This represents a step away from a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict,” Robert Wood, the deputy spokesman, said in a statement on June 1. “The U.S. reiterates its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.”
