U.S. Transfers USD 53 mln Assistance for Georgia

The United States has allocated USD 53.3 million as part of its USD 1 billion assistance pledge made for Georgia after the August war, U.S. ambassador in Tbilisi, John Tefft, said on May 21.

The first installment USD 250 million in frames of USD 1 billion assistance pledge came in November, 2008.

USD 20 million from the recent installment will aim at programs involving good governance, civic participation, election and media.

“This will include: supporting dialogue and participation in democratic political processes by strengthening civil society and its links to the government,” the U.S. embassy said. “Addressing governance by working with Parliament on its oversight role, capacity, responsiveness and accountability; strengthening the independence of the judiciary and improving rule of law through training and appointment and disciplinary processes, and assisting in the implementation of a new criminal procedure code; supporting a stronger participatory democracy by working with political parties and on electoral code reform; improving public access to objective news and information by strengthening media production capacity and professionalism.”

USD 18 million will be directed towards energy infrastructure and economic stimulus; USD 8 million for health, education and social services; USD 5.965 million for border security, counter-terrorism and law enforcement reform and USD 1.2 million for humanitarian assistance to replenish emergency humanitarian supply stocks that were depleted by the quick response to the August war and for the basic humanitarian needs of those who have been displaced as a result of the war.
