Burjanadze Hopeful over Rallies Momentum
Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary chairperson and leader of opposition Democratic Movement–United Georgia, said she was sure that rallies would not wane but instead gain more momentum in following days.
She told the Tbilisi-based Maestro TV late on April 9, that the large number of protesters on the first day of the rally “has scared the authorities.”
Eka Zguladze, the deputy interior minister, said “we thank the demonstrators for being peaceful.”
“Demonstrations can go on tomorrow and the days after, of course. I can assure you the government will continue to allow the protesters to come and go as long as they wish, in a peaceful and democratic manner,” she said.
She also said that riot police were stationed inside official buildings and only the patrol police were in the streets.
