Public Defender to Keep Close Eye on Rallies

Sozar Subari, the Georgian public defender, said his office would closely monitor situation during the rallies planned by the group of opposition parties from April 9.

He said on April 3 that 100-strong team of monitors from his office and from number of nongovernmental organizations cooperating with the Public Defender’s Office (PDO) dressed in special uniforms would be dispatched on the ground to monitor the situation.

“Unfortunately, right of assembly and demonstration is among those rights, which have been often violated in Georgia in recent five years,” Subari said.

Meanwhile, the group of opposition parties planning street protest rallies to demand President Saakashvili’s resignation, is campaigning on April 3-4 in western Georgia in lead up to the April 9 rally.
