Natelashvili: U.S. Wants Alasania as Georgia’s Next President
Irakli Alasania is a figure who has been “packed like a gift in the United States” and sent to Georgia to take over presidency, Shalva Natelashvili, leader of the opposition Labor Party said.
“It is not about personalities and I am not saying that a particular person is a bad one; the process itself is disastrous – a person who will be imposed [as a president] from abroad, no matter it is from Moscow or Washington, or through an agreement between them – will be in service of his patrons instead of being in service of the people,” Natelashvili told the public TV’s Weekly Politics program on February 22.
He said that Alasania was at the moment “key” figure in this plan and Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary chairperson, was “a reserve option,” as well as former Prime Minister, Zurab Nogaideli.
“I plan to visit the United States in the nearest future and there I will try to convince our American friends to give Georgia opportunity for free choice and free elections,” Natelashvili said.
