Ombudsman Pushes for ‘Secret Meeting’ Probe
Sozar Subari, the Public Defender, will formally ask the Parliamentary Chairman, Davit Bakradze, on February 16 to discuss setting up of an investigative commission to probe into, what he calls, “a secret meeting” during which break up of the November 7, 2007 protest rally was allegedly planned.
In his bi-annual report to the Parliament on the human rights, Subari claimed on December 30 that “the secret meeting” under chairmanship of Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili was held on November 4 and senior officials participating in it deliberately planned to break up anti-governmental demonstration with use of excessive force.
The Public Defender’s Office said on Monday that the request will be made to the parliamentary speaker to raise the issue of setting up of a parliamentary investigative commission at a session of parliamentary bureau – a body, which defines the Parliament’s weekly schedules. Parliamentary Chairperson, Davit Bakradze, is currently visiting Lithuania participating in the Baltic state’s National Day.
Subari said, that he once already requested the Parliamentary Chairman on the matter on January 12 in a written form, but had not received any response since then.
