Russia Says Georgia Captured its Soldier
Russia said its soldier, who according to Tbilisi defected from the Russian army, was captured by the Georgian law enforcement officers.
“Preliminary inquiry has showed that Junior Sergeant Alexandr Glukhov was captured in Akhalgori district and taken away to Tbilisi,” Interfax and RIA Novosti news agencies reported quoting Alexandr Drobishevsky, the Russian Defense Ministry’s spokesman.
He said that the Russian Defense Ministry had demanded from Georgia to immediately release the soldier.
The Georgian Interior Ministry said that the Russian soldier sought shelter in Georgia on January 26 after deserting his military unit in breakaway South Ossetia because of “unbearable conditions” there.
