Navy to Merge with Coast Guard

The Georgian navy, currently part of the Georgian armed forces, will be transferred under the Interior Ministry subordination in a form of its merger with the coast guard, according to the draft law currently being discussed by the parliamentary committees.

The structural changes should be implemented before February 1, 2009, according to the draft law, which was supported by the parliamentary committee for legal affairs at a hearing on December 3.

MP Murtaz Zodelava, a deputy chairman of the legal affairs committee, said that the move aimed at preventing “duplication of functions” between the navy and coast guard.

Meanwhile, the Parliament has endorsed with its third and final reading on December 2 a draft law, which allows any other law enforcement structure within the Interior Ministry to exercise border protection measures together with the Border Police upon Interior Minister’s ordinance.
