Republicans Deny Having Partnership Talks with Burjanadze

Republican Party leader, Davit Usupashvili, has denied having talks with former parliamentary chairman, Nino Burjanadze, on possible political partnership.

The Georgian media sources have been speculating recently that the Republican and New Rights parties could have emerged as partners to Burjanadze’s new party Democratic Movement-United Georgia, which held its inaugural congress on November 23.

“I sometimes meet with Burjanadze on a sideline of various events and we have exchange of opinions… But this is a relation with another political force, rather than having talks on future plans,” Usupashvili said in the newspaper interview, published on November 24.

He, however, confirmed having talks with the New Rights Party.

“I think that sometime in early December it will become clear whether we [the Republican and New Rights parties] will emerge on the political scene with a joint position, or our relations will remain just on the level of coordination,” Usupashvili said and added that even if the parties agree on a closer partnership it would no way mean merger of the two parties.
