Saakashvili in Baku for Energy Summit

President Saakashvili will visit Baku on November 14 to attend the energy summit along with leaders from the Baltic states, Azerbaijan, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine.

The summit will discuss alternative routes of transit of energy resources from the Caspian region to the western markets, bypassing Russia.

The European Commission released on November 13 an energy package, which identifies six strategic initiatives as essential for the EU’s energy security. One of them is so-called “southern gas corridor,” which is supposed to transport gas from the Caspian basin to Europe bypassing Russia.

The U.S. delegation at the summit is led by Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman.
