UN Envoy Visits Abkhazia

Johan Verbeke, the UN secretary-general’s new special representative to Georgia, met Sergey Shamba, the breakaway Abkhazia’s foreign minister, in Sokhumi on November 7, the Abkhaz official news agency, Apsnipress, reported.

“We are interested in continuation of the UN [observer] mission’s activities,” Apsnipress reported quoting Shamba as saying.

Apsnipress also reported that EU’s special representative for Georgia crisis, Pierre Morel, was expected to visit Sokhumi on November 10. Morel is trying to negotiate format of the Geneva talks, which are expected for November 18, between the sides. He has already visited Moscow and Tbilisi last month.
