Amnesty Planned in November
Acting Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said that President Saakashvili planned “a serious amnesty and pardoning” of inmates for November 23 – the fifth anniversary of the Rose Revolution.
He told lawmakers at a session of the parliamentary committee for legal affairs on October 30 that “several hundred” inmates would be pardoned.
“Until now the Interior Ministry has favored minimal amnesties for one reason – the high crime rate and cases where those pardoned have reoffended,” Merabishvili said. “This is the time in my tenure that the Interior Ministry has welcomed one [an amnesty].”
