Burjanadze Launches Party

Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary chairperson, announced on October 27 the establishment of “a clear-cut opposition party” called Democratic Movement-United Georgia.

“Recent developments have demonstrated that those people who are currently in the government cannot prevent new threats. Hence, Nino Burjanadze is returning to active politics,” she said in a statement.

An inaugural congress of Burjanadze’s party will be held on November 23, the fifth year anniversary of the Rose Revolution.

Today’s announcement comes as no surprise. In July Burjanadze established a think-tank, Foundation for Democracy and Development, which was believed to be a grassroots organization that would serve as a platform for her political comeback.

Burjanadze also said in her statement that “the crisis is deepening by the day.”

“We are facing an extremely difficult reality because of mistakes and inappropriate steps undertaken by the authorities,” she said. “Expected new provocations make the situation even worse. There is a great probability of new threats.”
