Medvedev Asks Parliament to Ratify Treaties with Abkhazia, S.Ossetia

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev submitted the partnership and friendship treaties with Abkhazia and South Ossetia to the State Duma for ratification.

Russian news agencies reported that the president submitted the documents to the lower house of the parliament with a note marked “priority.”

The treaties were signed between Medvedev and the secessionist leaders in Moscow on September 17. They have terms of ten years, and among other things, envisage military assistance, help in protecting borders and Russian military bases in the breakaway regions.
