Switzerland to Represent Russia’s Interests in Georgia
Switzerland has agreed to represent the diplomatic interests of the Russian Federation in Georgia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on October 3.
Russia shut down its embassy and consulate in Tbilisi on September 3 after Georgia formally notified Moscow of its decision to cut diplomatic ties with Russia.
“In order to minimize the negative consequences of this demarche by Tbilisi, the Russian Foreign Ministry, in keeping with international practice, has found a legally correct solution, which will allow us to maintain the necessary inter-state contacts in the interests of Russian and Georgian citizens,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It said a section dealing with Russia’s interests would be opened at the Swiss embassy.
“With the embassies of the two countries officially closed, it was legally impossible to settle many issues, including consular and humanitarian issues,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
