UN Secretary General’s Representative Visits Georgia

Walter Kälin, the UN secretary-general’s representative on the human rights of internally displaced persons, is visiting Georgia on October 1-4.

Kälin will assess the current situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the conflict-affected areas from a human rights perspective.

He will meet officials in Tbilisi, international organizations and IDPs. He will also travel to Gori and surrounding areas to assess the situation and meet IDPs and relevant actors involved in addressing the human rights of IDPs.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has urged all sides to guarantee the safe return of IDPs to their homes.

“The Russian and Georgian authorities, as well as the de facto South Ossetian administration must make every effort to guarantee security and provide assistance to all people without discrimination,” Nicola Duckworth, Europe and Central Asia Program Director at Amnesty International, said on October 1. “Those forced to flee their homes must be allowed to return safely and those unable or unwilling to do so, must be resettled.”
