Signs of Russian Withdrawal from Poti

Russian forces are undertaking measures indicating a withdrawal from Poti, Vano Saginadze, the mayor of the port town, said on September 11.

“They are rolling up razor wire and are removing tents; this has been observed at both checkpoints, which is a sign that they are dismantling them,” Saginadze told Rustavi 2 TV.

A Poti-based journalist working for the RFE/RL Georgian Service wrote on her blog that preparations for withdrawal were continuing. “Despite the fact that it’s been raining heavily, Russian soldiers are continuing to dismantle sections of the checkpoints,” she wrote on September 11.

Russia has undertaken a commitment under the agreement signed on September 8 to withdraw from all five checkpoints “on a line from Poti to Senaki” within a maximum of one week.
