Fuel Train Explodes Close to Gori

A fuel train, belonging to Azpetrol, exploded on rail tracks close to the village of Skra, west of the town of Gori, on Sunday.

Officials said the train apparently hit a mine, allegedly left by Russian troops.

Initial reports said no one was injured, although some reports said that at least two nearby houses had been damaged.

The main east-west rail link was disrupted on August 16 when a railway bridge close to Kaspi was blown up. Georgia blamed Russian forces, but Russia has denied any involvement.

According to the Georgian Railway, the fuel train was on an alternative route, an old line bypassing the blown up railway bridge, when it was hit by the blast.

TV footage showed unhitched and undamaged wagons with the logo of Azpetrol, an Azerbaijani company running petrol stations in Azerbaijan.
