Georgia Says it Controls Some Villages Inside ‘Buffer Zone’

The Interior Ministry said that Georgian police were in control of eight villages north and north-east of the town of Gori.

Eka Zguladze, the Georgian deputy interior minister, said on August 23 that the villages of Tsitelubani, Mejvriskhevi, Kheltubani, Zeduleti, Khorvaleti, Shavshvebi, Sveneti, Nadzreti were under Georgian control, adding that it was safe to return.

The villages are inside what the Russian side calls “the zone of responsibility of the Russian peacekeepers.”
