‘No Legal Ground for Returning Seized Ammo’ – Georgian Official
There is “no legal ground” for returning confiscated Russian peacekeepers’ ammunition, Eka Zguladze, the Georgian deputy interior minister, said on June 18.
“At this stage there is no legal ground to return the seized armaments, because the Russian side failed to provide any official documents about them and the Georgian side was not notified about their transportation,” she told journalists.
She said that four Russian peacekeepers, who were detained in the Zugdidi district for allegedly illegally transporting armaments, had been released, but an investigation was still underway.
Igor Konashenkov, a Russian Defense Ministry official, demanded on June 18 the immediate return of the truck and armaments to the Russian peacekeepers. He also said the incident was yet another provocation staged by the Georgian security services aimed at discrediting the Russian peacekeeping forces.
