A few dozen people, including some opposition leaders from the eight-party coalition, were gathered outside the parliament in the early hours of June 7.

Riot police were not to be seen in the immediate vicinity of the parliament; only parliamentary security were visible, sealing off the entrance.

Two anti-riot vehicles with water cannon and about 19 bus loads of riot policemen, however, were deployed not far from the parliament, on Rose Square (formerly Republic Square) early on June 7.

The newly elected parliament’s inaugural session is expected in the next few hours.

Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of the New Rights Party – part of the eight-party coalition – said the opposition expected more people to join the rally. “It will be physically impossible to hold the first session if as many people gather as there were on May 26,” Gamkrelidze, one of those outside the parliament early on June 7, said. “But even if the parliament is convened it would not mean it were legitimate.”
