Lavrov Questions Tbilisi’s Pledge on Joint Anti-Terrorist Center

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, said he doubted that the present authorities of Georgia would follow its commitment and set up a joint anti-terrorist center in Batumi.

According to the March 31, 2006 Russo-Georgian agreement on the pull out of the Russian military bases from Georgia, the two countries “at the earliest possible time, shall complete the elaboration of an Agreement on the Foundation and Functioning of a Georgian-Russian Antiterrorist Center and shall prepare it for signing.”

RIA Novosti news agency quoted Lavrov as saying on May 28 that he did not “foresee” Georgia following this commitment “under the present authorities.”

“It once again confirms [Georgia’s] failure to fulfill the agreements,” he added.

He also said that external forces were behind the Georgia’s moves and claimed that Tbilisi “was performing a role of Russia’s provoker.”
