Two Candidates from Ruling Party Concede Defeat in Majoritarian Contest
Two opposition majoritarian MP candidates have secured victory in Tbilisi’s two single-mandate constituencies.
Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of the New Rights Party – part of the nine-party bloc – leads polls in the Tbilisi’s Vake district and Davit Saganelidze also from the New Rights Party has won in Tbilisi’s Didube district.
Candidates from the ruling party in those single-mandate constituencies, ex-environment minister Zaza Gamtsemlidze (in Vake) and businessman Vladimer Kvaratskhelia have both conceded defeat.
The opposition Republican Party has claimed victory in two provincial districts – Tsageri (the ruling party had no candidate there) and Kazbegi.
The ruling party candidates, however, seem to be winning in most of the other single mandate constituencies both in Tbilisi and provinces. The Central Election Commission has so far posted only few counted votes into the majoritarian contest on its website. In the capital’s several single-mandate constituencies, judging on those results, the ruling party majoritarian MP candidates are leading with small margin.
In Samgori, however, the ruling party’s candidate Rusudan Kervalishvili seem to have more solid lead over Levan Gachechiladze, the leader of nine-party opposition bloc and a former presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, the Central Election Commission said that with 76% of votes already counted the ruling National Movement Party leads the polls in the proportional, party-list contest with 58.77%, followed by the nine-party bloc with 18.18%; the Christian-Democratic Party – 8.45%; the Labor Party – 7.44%.
