Georgia sought to show the world that it has no military build-up in upper Kodori Gorge by inviting foreign reporters on a trip to the gorge, which is the only part of breakaway Abkhazia under the Tbilisi’s control.

About two dozen foreign reporters, including from Russia, were in upper Kodori Gorge on a trip organized by the Tbilisi-loyal Abkhaz government-in-exile. A similar trip was organized last week and is also planned for separate group of foreign reporters next week, according to the Abkhaz government-in-exile.

A Reuters reporter, who spent two days in upper Kodori Gorge earlier this month, said officials made no attempt to impose restrictions on his movements. Reuters also reported that its reporter saw no sign of military build-up in the gorge.

UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) said on May 8 that its monitors had “not reported any buildup of security forces” either in Kodori Gorge, or at the administrative Abkhaz border by either sides.
