Six Russian peacekeepers were detained overnight on Sunday after their armored vehicle crashed into a civilian’s car in Zugdidi, a Georgian town at the Abkhaz administrative border, the Georgian television stations reported on May 18.
Five were released later; one, the drive of armored vehicle, however, remains in detention, the Georgian Public Broadcaster reported in its noon news bulletin on Sunday.
Rustavi 2 TV reported that Russian peacekeepers “were drunk.” TV station footage showed masked Georgian special purpose unit servicemen dragging Russian peacekeepers from armored vehicle at the gun point and pushing them into the police car.
“This is yet another case which demonstrates to everyone that the [current peacekeeping] format should be changed… Cases of this kind indicate on extremely low level of Russian peacekeepers’ professionalism,” Lado Gurgenidze, the Georgian Prime Minister, said.
