‘Russia will not Oppose if Sides Agree on Change of Format’
Russia will not oppose internationalization of the peacekeeping operation in the Abkhaz conflict zone if Sokhumi and Tbilisi agree on the matter, Yuri Baluevsky, chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces, said on May 16.
Speaking at a news conference in Brussels he also said that Russian peacekeepers played important role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Tbilisi is trying to change the current Russian-led peacekeeping operation in Abkhazia. The Abkhaz side, however, declared it would not agree on change of the format.
