Public Defender ‘Alarmed’ over Cases of Voter Intimidation
Public Defender, Sozar Subari, claimed on May 9 there was increased number of cases of election-related intimidations of state employees in the provinces that was “alarming.”
Speaking at a news conference Subari said many persons who became targets of “political pressure and terror” refrained from speaking out “because of fear.”
“In order to thoroughly probe into such cases, it is necessary that those persons who dared to testify should be protected and all these facts should be investigated; it is also necessary to punish all those persons, who are participating in this political pressure,” Subari said.
He also said that cases studied by his office involved intimidation of public school teachers and principals, including in Chiatura in western Georgia, as well as pressure on policemen in Mestia district of Svaneti region by local police chief.
