Russia Welcomes Georgian Troops’ Pullout from South Ossetia

In its statement issued on August 20 the Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed Georgia’s decision to pull out its extra troops from the South Ossetian conflict zone.

“Moscow has received the news over Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s decision to pull out Georgia’s extra troops from the South Ossetian conflict zone with great satisfaction. This is the only right step aiming at implementation of the Joint Control Commission agreements,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement reads.

The statement also reads that “now it is of vital importance to further follow undertaken commitments and observe a ceasefire.”

The U.S. Department of State also welcomed the Georgian government’s decision to withdraw its extra troops from the conflict zone. 

Only those 500 Georgian soldiers which are the part of a joint – Georgian-Russian-Ossetian – peacekeeping forces that have been deployed in the conflict zone since 1992 will remain in the region.
