OSCE Increases Number of Military Observers in Georgia
The Georgian Foreign Ministry hailed, on August 6, the decision of the OSCE Permanent Council to increase the number of military observers for the OSCE Mission in Georgia from 4 to 6 officers.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry takes noted of the support of Bulgaria (as the OSCE Chairman-in-Office), the United States and the European Union, which, together, made it possible to adopt the decision.
?The Georgian Foreign Ministry is convinced that the OSCE has the real capacity to discharge tension in the Tskhinvali region. Hence, Georgia looks hopefully forward to the forthcoming visit of ambassadors of the delegations of the OSCE Permanent Council member states to Georgia, scheduled for September 5-9,? reads a statement issued by the Georgian Foreign Ministry on August.
The Georgian authorities also attach great importance to the convening of the international conference at a high political level to deal with the issues regarding the resolution of the South Ossetian conflict.
Georgia is planning to submit its own proposals on political and economic aspects of conflict settlement as well as the demilitarization of the region.
?The Georgian authorities are confident that the OSCE will successfully continue to act as a guarantor of peace and stability in the region,? the statement adds.
On July 29 Salome Zourabichvili, the Georgian Foreign Minister, pushed the issue of increasing OSCE’s involvement in the settlement of the South Ossetian conflict at a session of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.
