Russia Pressures Georgia over Abkhazia in UN

Russia has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling on Georgia to stop provocative actions in breakaway Abkhazia, Russian news agencies reported on October 3.

The draft resolution also includes a call towards Georgia to suspend the functioning of the Tbilisi-backed Abkhaz government in upper Kodori Gorge. The headquarters of the government was opened in the Tbilisi-controlled part of breakaway Abkhazia on September 27.

Sokhumi  has denounced the Tbilisi-backed government as ?puppet and illegitimate.?

According to Russian news agencies the draft resolution also contains a demand to withdraw Georgian troops from upper Kodori Gorge.

Meanwhile, Georgian Ambassador to the UN Irakli Alasania said at a news conference in New York Russia had ?not yet made the strategic decision to be part of the solution rather than be part of the problem,? Reuters reported.

?It is crystal clear that the Russian peacekeeping force is not an impartial or international contingency. It became the force that works to artificially alienate the sides from one another,? he said.

He also urged Russia to stop naval exercises near Georgia?s sea border, calling them a threat to regional peace and a violation of the United Nations charter.
