Saakashvili Vows to Hunt Down ‘Spies’ in Abkhazia, S.Ossetia

President Saakashvili said on October 2 that although the Georgian government has “neutralized” one Russian intelligence network in Georgia, similar groups are operating in breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“We still have these kinds of networks on the territories which we still do not control; these are a very small part of the mountainous region of South Ossetia and also 70% of the territory of Abkhazia – because lately we have restored control over 30% of Abkhazia [referring to upper Kodori Gorge]. So on these territories we still have this kind of intelligence network, but we will find them, we’ll get them and we will hold them responsible. That is clear. I can promise that to everybody who is running these networks,” Saakashvili said.

He said that Georgia’s response towards “destabilization and subversion” attempts is “development and again development.”

He also denied allegations of the Abkhaz authorities that Georgia is mobilizing its troops on the Senaki military base in western Georgia.

“I can assure you that there is no mobilization of troops at the Senaki military base,” Saakashvili said.
