Georgian MPs Comment on Arrest of ‘Spies’
Parliamentarians from the ruling National Movement party hailed the arrests of Russian military officers suspected of spying and said that it has proved once again Russia’s “aggressive intentions” towards Georgia.
“Russia has been carrying out large-scale aggression against Georgia, and this crisis was not launched yesterday – it was launched long ago as Russia fails to tolerate Georgia’s independence,” influential parliamentarian Giga Bokeria said on September 28.
“Russian intelligence has been active in Georgia in recent years and harming our national interests. But as our special services have boosted their activities, foreign intelligence services will fail to carry out their anti-state activities here,” MP Levan Bezhuashvili, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Affairs, said.
MP Givi Targamadze, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security, described the reaction of the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministers following the arrest of the Russian military officers as “hysterical.”
“Their statements are not based on real facts. We will provide evidence proving these people’s guilt,” MP Targamadze said.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Tbilisi is trying to provoke Russia, again proving the anti-Russian stance of the Georgian authorities.
