Georgia Plans to Formally Increase MoD Troops

President Saakashvili has submitted a proposal for consideration in Parliament envisaging an increase of the number of Defense Ministry troops from 26 000 to 28 000.

The current law on the number of Georgian armed forces sets MoD troops at a maximum of 26 000. This was increased from 23 000 by a new law signed by the President in January 2006.

The proposal to again increase the number of MoD troops was discussed at the Parliamentary Bureau session on September 25.

Currently, the actual number of MoD troops does not exceed 21 500 servicemen, according to the Georgian Ministry of Defense.
