Georgian, Abkhaz Officials Meet in Sokhumi

Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Merab Antadze held talks with Foreign Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Shamba in Sokhumi on September 9, the Georgian State Minister?s Office reported.


The two sides discussed the prospects of holding meetings within the frames of the Georgian-Abkhaz Coordinating Council.


A session of the Georgian-Abkhaz Coordinating Council scheduled for August 2 was thwarted after the Abkhaz side refused to participate in the talks. The Abkhaz side wants Georgia to pull out its troops from the upper Kodori Gorge.


According to the Georgian State Minister?s Office, the Georgian side reiterated its readiness to continue peaceful dialogue with the Abkhaz side during the talks, calling on the Abkhaz side not to yield to any Russian provocations that aim to escalate tensions and destabilize the situation in the region.
