Overnight Shootout Reported Near Tskhinvali

Tskhinvali, the capital of breakaway South Ossetia, came under ?massive fire? overnight on September 9, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported. No casualties are reported.


The shooting came from the Georgian village of Ergneti in the south of Tskhinvali at 00:10 a.m. on September 9 and lasted for 20 minutes, according to this report.


Interior Minister of the breakaway region Mikhail Mindzaev said there was also shooting on the South Ossetian checkpoint in the north of Tskhinvali near the Georgian village of Tamarasheni.


RIA Novosti news agency reported quoting Paata Bedianashvili, Commander of the Georgian peacekeeping battalion in the conflict zone, that a skirmish erupted between South Ossetian militiamen and Georgian police officers near the village of Ergneti. He said there were no casualties among the Georgian officers.
