Saakashvili Comments on Arrest of Giorgadze’s Allies
President Saakashvili, who is currently visiting Poland, said on September 6 that he can only welcome the arrests of Moscow-based, wanted ex-security chief Igor Giorgadze’s associates in Georgia, who are charged with plotting a coup.
“If you want me to tell you that I am sorry [about the arrests of Giorgadze’s allies], it is not really true. What I am now sorry about is that our [national football] team has suffered an undeserved defeat against Ukraine [Euro 2008 qualifier on September 6],” Saakashvili told Georgian journalists late on September 6.
“These people will receive what they deserve and their patrons and sponsors will see this. As far as I know, hysteric attempts were underway [to plan a coup]. The wine embargo [by Russia] has failed to bring results, military provocations as well; so this kind of thing [plotting a coup] has been left at their disposal; but these attempts will not harm us if we are consolidates,” he added.
