S.Ossetia to Hold Independence Referendum in 2006
South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity said his breakaway region will hold an independence referendum by the end of 2006, RIA Novosti news agency reported on August 30.
?I am sure we will be able to hold a referendum by the end of this year,? Kokoity said.
He also called on the ethnic Georgian population of the breakaway region to participate in the ballot.
On August 29 the Georgian Foreign Ministry condemned the unrecognized republic?s plans to hold referendum as illegitimate and as an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region.
