Tbilisi Awaits UN Observers’ Response on Kodori Monitoring
The Georgian side is waiting for the UN Observer Mission’s response to Tbilisi’s offer to launch monitoring of upper Kodori Gorge, State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Merab Antadze said on August 24.
“We are now waiting for the UN mission’s proposals, which are now under preparation; after this the monitoring of the gorge will be carried out,” Antadze said.
He was speaking at a news conference after a meeting with Secretary of the National Security Council Kote Kemularia and Minister for Accommodation and Refugees Giorgi Kheviashvili. The situation in Kodori Gorge reportedly topped the agenda of the meeting.
The Georgian authorities announced that they were ready to provide security and transportation to UN observers for the monitoring of upper Kodori Gorge in breakaway Abkhazia starting from August 20. Tbilisi also said it will not let Russian peacekeepers to take part in the monitoring team, and that Russian representatives can participate in the inspection of the gorge only as part of the UN observer team.
