Law Specifies South Ossetia Presidential Elections Date
According to amendments to the Law on Presidential Elections adopted by the breakaway South Ossetian Parliament on August 23, the presidential polls “should be held on the second Sunday of the month in which previous elections were held,” the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported.
The previous elections in the unrecognized republic were held in November, 2001.
Therefore, elections should be held on the second Sunday of this November. However, in April the South Ossetian council of elders, which is a consulting body of the South Ossetian leader’s administration, has called for the postponement of presidential elections citing “the tense foreign political situation.”
